There’s an obvious need for community in the US today. It’s almost every day you see a new run club, start-up centered on building community, or a new type of group forming. It’s the one thing people were deprived of during the pandemic, and it’s the one thing we all need as humans. We were made for relationship, and we were made to operate within a larger body. People are seeking connection, and people are seeking out others to discover a sense of belonging. It’s a beautiful and necessary thing.

I’m writing this because I have the privilege of leading a men’s grow group (Bible study) through my church. Run clubs and farmers markets are great, but they don’t really give you the honest and truthful connection you might be seeking. That’s where I found myself over two years ago. I had friends I cared about, I was involved in all the things that looked good on paper, and from the outside looking in, you’d say I had no need to be connected to anything else. But I always found myself yearning for conversation and relationship that I just wasn’t getting through anything outside of a few close friends. There was a common denominator missing, and surprise — it was the Holy Spirit.

I was seeking answers to questions a non-believer couldn’t answer or answered with a genuine but lackluster response that I knew wasn’t going to provide any truth. It wasn’t until I joined a church and grow group myself that this void I was experiencing began to fill. I no longer was the isolated, misunderstood philosopher I was secretly hoping to be. Turns out many people had the same questions and thoughts as me and found themselves questioning the world and themselves because the world didn’t provide truth.

More importantly, I was around people who, although they had wildly different lives and circumstances than me, were after the same thing. Navigating life and understanding calling and purpose can only be done through relationship with Christ. There’s no escaping the truth that we were uniquely created and designed by God. Alike, but at the same time completely unique. This uniqueness is exactly why we are meant to grow together. Differing perspectives and personalities only sharpen each other when the common denominator is Christ. Truth is uncovered, connections are forged, bonds are built, and growth is inevitable.

I’ve seen people with polar opposite backgrounds and experiences help each other gain perspective and recognize truth simply by sharing their testimony or a Godly lesson learned. What I cannot see or understand myself, a brother or sister will be there to make it known to me. This creates confidence, trust, and a boldness backed by truth. We will be challenged, humbled, and forced to rethink our approach to things.

This is so important in today’s culture where polarization thrives and anyone can just run to their favorite corner of the internet to find people who will support their claims and beliefs.

Surround yourself with Spirit-minded people rather than like-minded people. God has been waiting to use you for someone else’s breakthrough, and there’s probably someone out there waiting to assist you in yours.
